a. Animals move from place to place whereas plants remain fixed at one point. What is the need for the animals to move about?
Answer:
Plants make food by themselves, Plants get everything (soil, air, water, light, etc.) in the same place. So they don’t need to move. Animals depend on others for food and they have to move in search of food.
b. Animals are dependent on plants directly or indirectly. What do you understand by this statement?
Answer: Animals are heterotrophs means depend on plants for food such as flowers, fruits, vegetables, grains, etc. which are produced by plants through photosynthesis.
c. A human baby grows with time. A snowball grows in size as it rolls. What is the difference in the two growths?
Answer: The growth of a human baby is natural whereas the growth of a snowball is not natural.
d. A green plant takes in oxygen and gives out carbon dioxide. It also takes in carbon dioxide and gives out oxygen. How does this happen?
Answer: A green plant takes in oxygen and gives out carbon dioxide through its Stomata. This process is called transpiration. When plants take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen, is called photosynthesis.

3. Answer the following questions briefly:
a. What are receptors?
Answer: Receptors are specialized cells or organs that detect a stimulus as light, heat. Receptors receive the message and send to nervous system (Nerves). Their job is to convert the stimulus into electrical signals in nerve cells which bring about responses. Nerves are thread like structure which carry message from one part of the body to another. Receptors are also known as sensory organs.
b. Why are receptors in animals mainly situated in their heads?
Answer: Receptors in animals are mainly situated in their heads because the brain acts as a telephone exchange which receives the message from the stimulus and sends to the right muscles or organs to bring about the correct responses. i.e.- eyes- light, nose- smell, tongue- taste, ear- sound etc.
c. Name a receptor of the human body which is not situated in the head.
Answer: Skin is a receptor that spread over the whole body and receives the stimulus and sends it to the brain for a response.
d. How do muscles help in responding to stimulus?
Answer: Muscles are attached to bones that receive a nerve message. Nerves send stimuli to the brain then the brain chooses the correct muscle and sends the message for the correct response.
4. When a boy touches a hot plate, he jerks his hand back. Trace the pathway through which messages travel in bringing about this response.
Answer: When a boy touches a hot plate, he jerks his hand back is quick response of stimulus of hot plate. Through the skin of the finger messages sent to nerves then brain which sent response back.
5. Keep a potted plant in a closed box with a small hole. Keep this box on a window sill. Open the box after ten days.
a. What do you notice?
Answer: The stem of the potted plant bends towards light. It is sensitive to light (phototropism) and came out from the hole.
b. Why is this response useful to the plant?
Answer: In presence of light plants can make food by photosynthesis and grow properly otherwise in dark, plant color will be yellowish, long and will not show proper growth.
c. Which are the other stimuli, the stem might respond to?
Answer: A money plant or cucumber plant starts climbing the moment it gets support. These plants respond to touch. d. What kind of stimuli do you think a root might respond to? Answer: Root responds to the Gravity of earth, which is called geotropism.
