What are Grasslands?
Grasslands are largely spread land covered with tall grasses and very few trees.
About 20 percent of the Earth’s surface is covered with grasslands. Most of the grasslands are located in the Temperate Zone and some are located in the Tropical Zone.
The Temperate zone is found in two parts – North Temperate Zone and South Temperate Zone.
The North Temperate Zone is located between the Tropic of Cancer (23.5° N) and the Arctic Circle (66.5° N)
The South Temperate Zone is located between the Tropic of Capricorn (23.5° S) and the Antarctic Circle (66.5° S)
Major Grasslands of the World
Grasslands are known by different names in different parts of the world.
Prairies – The grasslands of North America
Pampas – The grasslands of South America
Steppes – The grasslands of Russia (spread in Asia and Europe)
Veld – The grasslands of South Africa
Downs – The grasslands of Australia
Savannas – The grasslands of Central Africa (including DRC)
Prairies is a French word that means grassland or meadow (a piece of grassland). Most of the Prairies are located in the United States of America (USA) and some parts are located in Canada.
Climate of Prairies
Prairies has hot summers and cold winters.
Rainfall is moderate and occurs mainly in summers.
Vegetation of Prairies
Prairies are vast stretched flat land covered with grasses. These grasses are green in summer and turns brown in autumn. Very few trees are found here.
