NCERT Class 7 Geography Chapter 2 Question Answers

NCERT Class 7 Geography Chapter 2 Question Answers

1. What are the three layers of the earth?
Answer: Crust, Mantle, and Core.

2. What is a rock?
Answer: A rock is a natural mass of mineral matter that makes up the earth’s crust.

3. Name three types of rocks.
Answer: Igneous rocks, Sedimentary rocks, and Metamorphic rocks.

4. How are extrusive and intrusive rocks formed?
Answer:
When the molten lava comes to the earth’s surface, it rapidly cools down and becomes solid over the crust, it is called extrusive igneous rocks. Sometimes the molten magma cools down deep inside the earth’s crust. These Solid rocks are called intrusive igneous rocks.

5. What do you mean by a rock cycle?
Answer: The process of transformation of the rock from one to another under certain conditions is known as the rock cycle. For example, Igneous rocks change into sedimentary rocks.
When the igneous and sedimentary rocks are subjected to heat and pressure, they change into Inside Our Earth metamorphic rocks. The metamorphic rocks which are still under great heat and pressure meet down to form molten magma. This molten magma again can cool down and solidify into igneous rocks.

6. What are the uses of rocks?
Answer: Hard rocks are used for making roads, houses, buildings, monuments, etc. Stones are used in many games as well.

7. What are metamorphic rocks?
Answer: When the igneous and sedimentary rocks are subjected to heat and pressure they change into metamorphic rocks. For example, clay changes into slate and limestone into marble.

NCERT Class 7 Geography Chapter 2 Question Answers – Match the Columns

1. Core(e) Innermost Layer
2. Minerals(d) Has the definite chemical composition
3. Rocks(b) Used for roads and buildings
4. Clay(f) Changes into slate
5. Sial(c) Made of silicon and alumina

Give reasons for the following statements.

1. We cannot go to the center of the earth.
Reason: To reach the center of the earth one will have to dig a hole of 6000 km. deep on the ocean floor. This is quite impossible and therefore we cannot go to the center of the earth.

2. Sedimentary rocks are formed from sediments.
Reason: Rocks break down into small fragments known as sediments. These sediments are transported and deposited by wind, water, etc. These loose sediments are compressed and hardened to form layers of rocks known as sedimentary rocks.

3. Limestone is changed into marble.
Reason: Limestone is changed into marble because igneous and sedimentary rocks change into metamorphic rocks under great heat and pressure.
