Poor people were forced to go and build new homes, start new lives elsewhere.
Some of the displaced people settled around the reservoir and found their livelihoods in fishing.
The Struggle of TMS
In 1994, the MP government gave fishing rights to private contractors. These contractors drove the local people away and got cheap labor from outside. The local villagers were threatened and asked to leave by the contractors.
The villagers stood united and formed Tawa Matsya Sangh (TMS).
TMS organized rallies and a chakka jam (road blockade) for fishing rights.
In 1996, the MP government decided to give fishing rights to the displaced people.
TMS is a Fisherworker’s cooperatives. It is fighting for the rights of the displaced forest dwellers. It also helps the people financially by giving them loans for nets and boats. TMS buys the fishes at a fair price and also provides the facilities of preservation.
